SKYPEC ATTENDED 2024 AVIATION ENERGY FORUM ORGANIZED BY IATA

Recently, SKYPEC as a strategic partner of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), attended the 2024 Aviation Energy Forum held in Malaysia.

The Aviation Energy Forum 2024 (AEF), organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is a key event that brings together experts, airlines, and fuel suppliers to discuss trends, solutions, and initiatives in the global aviation energy industry.

This year's main theme is "Clean Energy for a Sustainable Future," emphasizing the urgency of transitioning fuel sources and the goal of reducing carbon emissions in the aviation industry. The event focuses on sustainable energy solutions, with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Green Hydrogen Fuel being identified as two critical factors in achieving the net-zero emissions target by 2050.

One of the notable topics in the discussions on market trends and forecasts is the impact of global geopolitical and economic changes on the aviation fuel market. In this context, the sessions provided insights into the changing fuel demand in the Asia-Pacific region, which is seeing an increase in aviation fuel needs, while supply sources may be affected by factors such as the closure of many refineries worldwide combined with the green energy trend. This could lead to significant fuel price fluctuations in different regions.

A key issue discussed at AEF 2024 is the development and distribution of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the challenges surrounding production costs and scalability. To produce SAF efficiently, substantial investment in technology and infrastructure is required, and the current production costs of SAF are much higher compared to traditional jet fuel. Experts from Neste, Shell, and major airlines pointed out that despite intense competition from other energy sources, the SAF market holds strong growth potential, especially as governments and international organizations continue to implement policies encouraging SAF use, such as tax reductions and investment subsidies for SAF projects.

The technical topics on aviation fuel at AEF 2024 also received significant attention. Updates from the IATA Fuel Quality Pool (IFQP) and the Joint Inspection Group (JIG) provided essential information on technical findings and improvements aimed at ensuring fuel quality and preventing contamination-related incidents in aircraft fuel tanks.

Additionally, new solutions in filtration technology and pressure control on fuel transmission vehicles, along with optimized logistics solutions for fuel transport, were provided by experts to help reduce costs and improve the efficiency of aviation fuel supply. Another important technical topic was the development of green hydrogen technology for the aviation sector. Hydrogen fuel, produced from renewable energy sources, is CO2 emission-free when burned and is expected to be a game-changer in the future of aviation.
